CHAPTER FIFTEEN

It was early evening, Shady and Josie in Josie’s room, as silent as they’d been in the library, each contemplating the events of the day so far.

Shady had written it all down, the people who had gone missing—they’d found no more prior to Dud Hooper—and the links, no matter how tenuous, to Brandi’s disappearance. They’d then taken it all to the Baker City Police Department, explaining they might have information that could help with the teen’s disappearance. They’d been seen quickly, told by the lieutenant and his supporting officer to take a seat in the interview room.

As if a gasket had blown, words had come pouring out of Shady as she’d told and shown them everything except the photograph of Jerry Hilt and the then chief of police. She’d held back that particular gem because in no way did she wish to imply the police were perhaps involved in this web that she was indeed creating, garnering disapproval before they’d even gotten going, maybe even risk getting sued for libel into the bargain.

The lieutenant, younger than Shady had expected, kind of good-looking with dark floppy hair and piercing eyes, had listened patiently while his officer took notes. Good, all good, it had been going well, then Shady noticed the officer had stopped writing and, like the lieutenant, was staring at her, a look of confusion marring his slightly more lived-in face.

“I know it doesn’t seem to make sense,” she began, but the lieutenant interrupted her.

“I appreciate what you’ve done. We do, the police. We never wish to discourage anyone sharing information with us that they think might prove useful. The most vital clue can be the most random, but this…I’m going to be honest with you. It’s left-field.”

“My friend’s a psychic,” Josie said, again blurting out information that Shady would rather have kept private. In fact, they’d agreed between themselves beforehand not to mention this particular fact to the police, not unless it was necessary. Clearly, Josie now thought it was very necessary, Shady wishing, though, she’d hung on a little longer, because there it was in the lieutenant’s and his sidekick’s eyes: disbelief, amusement even.

They were losing any credibility they might have had, and fast.

“This isn’t just about insight,” Shady said. “This is fact. That’s four people who’ve gone missing from this area on that date, three of them never found. Cold cases.”

“Decades apart,” the lieutenant calmly pointed out.

“Yeah, sure, but—”

“You thinking it may be the work of a serial killer?”

“Well…yeah,” Shady answered. “Or killers.”

“There’s no profile.”

“Excuse me?” said Josie.

“Serial killers usually have a type they go for—all women, for example, young men or older men. There’s no type here.”

“They were hunters,” Shady stressed. “That’s a type. Okay, not Brandi but the other three. All keen and experienced hunters who loved hunting in this area especially.”

The lieutenant sat back in his chair, still calm, still collected. “You know how many people love to hunt in this part of the world? More than we can count. Plus, like you said, Brandi was no hunter, and neither were her parents.
